The problem with seeing half the nominees the day before the awards is I don't have time to get as in-depth as I'd like to, so I'm just going to list my predictions, with some brief thoughts for a few the categories.

What I think will win is italicized, what I think should win is in bold, and anything I haven't seen yet is struck

Best Picture
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

This is a pretty impressive crop of movies. Argo, which I think is going to be rare film to win Best Picture without a director nomination, is an incredible film, and it still comes in fourth on my personal list of the nominees. The only real weak links are Les Miz and Silver Linings, which are good but not on the same level as the other nominees.

Best Actor
Bradley Cooper
Daniel Day-Lewis
Hugh Jackman
Joaquin Phoenix
Denzel Washington

Best Actress
Jessica Chastain
Jennifer Lawrence
Emmanuelle Riva
Quvenzhané Wallis
Naomi Watts

Best Supporting Actor
Alan Arkin
Robert DeNiro
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Tommy Lee Jones
Christoph Waltz

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams
Sally Field
Anne Hathaway
Helen Hunt
Jacki Weaver

My personal pick is really Ann Dowd for Compliance, but I think not being nominated hurts her chances of winning.

Best Director
Michael Haneke
Behn Zeitlin
Ang Lee
Steven Spielberg
David O. Russell

I know i'm hardly the first one to say in, but Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow should both be on this list. I'd happily give it to either of them before Spielberg or Russell.

Best Animated Feature
Brave
Frankenweenie
ParaNorman
The Pirates! Adventures With Scientists
Wreck-It Ralph

Brave is the best movie here, but I would not be disappointed if ParaNorman won.

Best Cinematography
Anna Karenina
Django Unchained
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall

Life of Pi's best visual compositions are all heavily, if not totally, computer-generated. While that doesn't make them less impressive, Claudio Miranda shouldn't get an award for the work of the postproduction team.

Best Costume Design
Anna Karenina
Les Misérables
Lincoln
Mirror Mirror
Snow White and the Huntsman

Best Documentary Feature
5 Broken Cameras
The Gatekeepers
How to Survive a Plauge
The Invisible War
Searching for Sugar Man

Best Documentary Short
Inocente
King's Point
Mondays at Racine
Open Heart
Redemption

King's Point and Redemption lack the narrative drive to be on this list; just pointing a camera at something doesn't make a documentary, you have to actually tell a story.

Best Film Editing
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

Best Foreign Language Film
Amour
Kon-Tiki
No
A Royal Affair
War Witch

Even though I've only had the chance to see one of these, I think the movie that's also nominated for Best Picture is a pretty safe bet.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Hitchcock
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Misérables

Les Miz is the best of a bad lot here. The Hobbit's makeup was hurt by the higher framerate, which the makeup artists should have done camera tests and figured out how to compensate for. Les Miz was decent, but I didn't believe Jackman had aged as much as his character is meant to. By all rights Lincoln should get the Oscar.

Best Original Score
Anna Karenina
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall

Best Original Song
Before My Time
Everybody Needs a Best Friend
Pi's Lullaby
Skyfall
Suddenly

I didn't see Chasing Ice, but I did listen to Before My Time, which is as forgettable as Pi's Lullaby. I doubt it's even eligable because it's from a short, but Sofia So Far from Curfew is better than most of these nominees.

Best Production Design
Anna Karenina
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln

I just want to say I'm happy they changed the name of this category from Art Direction. Same job, but Production Design is a more accurate description.

Best Animated Short
Adam and Dog
Fresh Guacamole
Head Over Heels
Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare"
Paperman

Four pretty good movies and one that's absolutely incredible. No contest.

Best Live Action Short
Asad
Buzkashi Boys
Curfew
Death of a Shadow
Henry

Curfew and Death of a Shadow are both excellent, but Curfew has enough emotional impact to give it the edge. Asad and Buzkashi Boys are the definite weak links in this category.

Best Sound Editing
Argo
Django Unchained
Life of Pi
Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty

Best Sound Mixing
Argo
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall

Best Visual Effects
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Life of Pi
The Avengers
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman

I think The Avengers hurt itself by being too good. A lot of the effects shots, such as making a New Mexico sound stage look like the streets of New York, don't stand out as effects shots.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook

Best Original Screenplay
Amour
Django Unchained
Flight
Moonrise Kingdom
Zero Dark Thirty
