Good performances and interesting characters, but I was hoping for a better story. The main character and his part in things is great, but it seems like one unique character has been thrown into an otherwise run-of-the-mill bank robbery movie, and it’s not enough to make the rest of the movie stand out.
21. Grindhouse
Easily the most fun I’ve had in a movie theater this year. I almost considered counting this as 21 and 22, because Planet Terror and Death Proof are two very different movies, but the double feature as a whole is an experience that works far better than the sum of its parts. The different takes on the project were interesting: Rodriguez made a spoof of a 70s zombie flick, poking fun at the ridiculous cliches of the genre, while Tarantino made a straight 70s gear head movie, letting the absurdity of a genre where the cars and crashes are more important that the story stand on its own. Both work in completely different ways, and are even better played off each other.
