DVD 8: La Vie En Rose
Biopic of Edith Piaf, made interesting by Marion Cotillard’s performance. That’s not to say the story itself is bad, but it lacks the focus of other recent musician biopics, instead telling us interesting things that happened during Piaf’s life without forming one cohesive narrative. The film won two Oscars last night, for acting and makeup, and deserved them both. Either Cotillard’s performance or the makeup used would have convincingly portrayed Piaf as she aged three decades; together they make the movie.

So, If you're serious about doing another 30-sec PSA for us, I'd love all the help I can get. I figure, you can use the video footage you made last year and splice together a nice "slice of life" 30 seconds of fun images at the fest from last year... then we can throw in the graphics and band pics from this year. This is actually the impression I came away with, as well. Marion Cotillard was fantastic, but the story itself seriously seemed to lack focus, and it was made all the more excruciating for me by the fact that Edith Piaf was annoying and bratty. I've been telling people that it is an excellent film that I really can't recommend because it has so many things going against it, making it excellently acted but not particularly entertaining.
