So our DVD player has died. A couple weeks ago it was only occasionally turning on, then yesterday it started turning itself off immediately after being turned on. It was an old player, and served us well these many years.
For a while we’ve had a DVD player/surround sound system sitting in the closet. It was a gift from before I met Meg, and we had just never had a room where the surround sound would be worth setting up (it kind of requires that the TV be the focus of the room, which it just isn’t for us). But it was a DVD player so we decided to give it a shot. Got all the speakers in place and the player hooked up to the TV, turned it on, heard a spinning sound, then nothing. Tried again with the same result. Went online and found out that it’s a common problem with that model, and that even if we could get it serviced it would probably crap out again within a month or two.
So it was off to look at new DVD players. Walking the appropriate section of Best Buy and looking at prices, we realized that the price of a Blue Ray player was a little less than the bonus I’d gotten from work last week, so we decided to go ahead and upgrade. Still no HDTV (not until they come way down in price), but now we can get HD movies while still playing the almost 400 that we already have.
By the way, as far as we can tell the speakers from the surround system work just fine. So if anyone wants 5 speakers and a subwoofer they’re yours for the taking.
